Historical location

During 1995 and 1996, archaeological research was conducted at the Plečaš Stables site, which resulted in the sensational discovery of the remains of a Roman temple – the Augusteum and 17 marble sculptures of supernatural and natural height. This discovery prompted the idea of a joint presentation of this unique archaeological site, both of architectural remains and of other numerous archaeological materials.
The foundation stone for the future museum was laid on 19 July 2004, and the Narona Archaeological Museum was founded by decree of the Government of the Republic of Croatia in 2005, and after extremely complex construction works, it was ceremonially opened on 18 May 2007, as the first museum in Croatia built in situ. This way of presenting an archaeological site has enriched the museum offer of Croatia and has few parallels in Europe and the world.
